Ánte Mikkel Gaup belongs to the North Sami joik and storytelling tradition from Inner Finnmark, more specifically from Guovdageaidnu/Kautokeino. He is a trained teacher and has worked for many years as a performer, artist, and educator. As a renowned storyteller, he has performed at numerous festivals both in Norway and internationally. He has also held several acting roles at the Sami National Theatre, Beaivváš.
Ánte Mikkel is a key figure in preserving and developing the traditional joik. Through joik, storytelling, lectures, concerts, and dramatizations, he conveys Sami culture to both children and adults. An important part of his artistic work is the fairytale character Juffá, whom he brings to life in various performances and stories. He has also released CDs with joik and stories about Juffá – all in Sami.
Enter the Star Tent – a Journey into the Sami Night Sky
Bring the whole family into the Star Tent during the Sami Church Days! A beautiful and exciting performance awaits, filled with constellations, joik, and stories from the Sami sky.
The Star Tent is a magical, round room where up to 30 people sit on the floor in the dark and watch the stars light up above them. A specially made projector illuminates the ceiling with constellations, and not just any constellations: here, you will see the Sami night sky and hear the ancient myths connected to it.
At the center of the tent, joik, storytelling, and stunning images tell the story of an ancient hunt – the great moose hunt in the sky. You’ll meet Sarvva (the great elk), Fávnnadávgi, Gállas' sons, and other mythical figures – all drawn from the constellations we know as the Big Dipper, Orion’s Belt, and Gemini. But what happens if the elk is killed? You’ll find out inside the tent.
